Mark Lunsford and Vicki Rios-Martinez shed a tear at the Space Coast Conference on Child Protection. Emotions ran high at the 2006 conference held at the Radisson Resort in Cocoa Beach. Lunsford shared memories of his daughter “Jessie” who was nine when she was murdered by  a convicted child-molester.  Mrs Martinez’s son suffered a similar fate in 1991 at the age of eleven.

The event was a homecoming for Mr. Lunsford, who had just completed a nationwide campaign to promote the Jessica Lunsford Act.  Forty-three states adopted the legislation in some form.

Protect Our Children, Inc. held the conference in order to promote ordinances restricting residence and increasing supervision of registered sex offenders.  The measures were soon enacted by every city in Brevard
